How to check your gift card balance
You don't need an app, an account, or a phone call. Checking your balance on GiftCardMall takes about 30 seconds. Here's what you'll need and how to do it.
What you'll need
Before you start, grab your physical gift card (or the email if it's a digital card). You need three things from it:
- The card number — a 15 or 16-digit number on the front of the card. On some cards this is printed flat, on others it's embossed. A few brands hide it under a scratch-off strip.
- The expiry date — printed as MM/YY, usually on the front or back. Not every gift card has one, but most prepaid Visa and Mastercard cards do.
- The PIN — a 3-digit number on the back of the card. Look near the barcode or signature strip. If there's a silver panel you need to scratch off, the PIN is under there.
Step by step
Go to the balance checker
Head to the GiftCardMall homepage. The balance checker form is right at the top. You can't miss it.
Type in your card number
Enter all 16 digits. The form will automatically add dashes for you as you type, so don't worry about formatting. If your card only has 15 digits (some Amex cards), that works too.
Add the expiry and PIN
Type the expiry as month and year (like 09/27). Then enter the 3-digit PIN. If your card doesn't have a PIN printed anywhere, try 000 — some issuers don't require one.
Hit "Check balance"
That's it. We'll connect to the card issuer and pull your current balance. It usually takes a few seconds. Your remaining amount will show up right on the screen.
Trouble finding the PIN?
This is the most common hangup people run into. Here's where to look depending on the card type:
- Visa / Mastercard prepaid — Back of card, near the signature strip. Often under a scratch-off panel. Use a coin, not your fingernail.
- Store gift cards — Usually printed in small text near the barcode on the back. Some cards print it right next to the card number on the front.
- Digital / e-gift cards — Check the email or text message you received. The PIN is usually listed alongside the card number and expiry.
- No PIN visible at all? — Try entering 000. If that doesn't work, you may need to call the number on the back of the card to get it.
Things to keep in mind
- If you just made a purchase, the charge might still be processing. Wait a few hours and check again.
- Some older cards that have been inactive for a long time may have had fees deducted from the balance.
- We don't store any of your card details. Once the balance check is done, your info is gone.
