Using GiftCardMall

How do I check my gift card balance?

Go to the homepage, type in your card number, the expiry date as MM/YY, and the 3-digit PIN from the back of the card. Hit "Check balance" and you'll see your remaining amount in a few seconds. No login, no sign-up.

Which gift cards work with GiftCardMall?

Most of them. We support Visa, Mastercard, and Amex prepaid cards, plus retail cards from places like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Starbucks, Home Depot, and a lot more. Check the full list for details.

Does this cost anything?

Nope. It's free. There's no charge per check, no monthly fee, and no premium tier. You can check as many cards as you want, whenever you want.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Just go to the site and check your balance. We don't have user accounts, passwords, or profiles. You don't even need to give us an email address.

Can I check from my phone?

Yes. The site works on any phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Just open mygc-giftcardmall.com in your browser. There's no app to install.

Card details and troubleshooting

Where's the PIN on my card?

Flip the card over. The PIN is usually a 3-digit number near the barcode or signature strip. Some cards hide it under a silver scratch-off coating — use a coin to gently reveal it. If you genuinely can't find a PIN anywhere on the card, try entering 000.

My card doesn't have an expiry date. What do I enter?

Some store gift cards don't have expiry dates printed on them. In that case, try 12/30 or any future date. Retail cards often don't validate the expiry during a balance check.

The checker says my card isn't supported. Now what?

That usually means the card issuer doesn't have an online balance lookup system that we can connect to. Your best bet is calling the phone number printed on the back of the card. It's less convenient, but it always works.

My balance looks wrong. Why?

If you used the card recently, the transaction might still be processing. Most charges take a few hours to post, sometimes up to 24 hours. Check again later. If the balance still seems off after a day, call the issuer's customer service line — they can give you a full transaction history.

Can I check a card without a PIN?

Try entering 000 as the PIN. Some card issuers don't actually require a PIN for balance checks, and 000 acts as a placeholder. If it still doesn't work, you'll need to contact the issuer directly.

Privacy and safety

Do you save my card number or PIN?

No. Your card details are sent to the issuer to check the balance, and that's it. We don't log them, store them in a database, or share them with anyone. Once the check is done, the data is gone.

Is it safe to enter my card info here?

Yes. Your connection to GiftCardMall is encrypted. We don't store your data and we don't have user accounts that could be breached. The card info goes in, the balance comes back, and nothing is kept.

Will checking my balance affect the card?

No. A balance check is read-only. It doesn't deduct anything, lock the card, or trigger any changes. You're just looking at the balance, not doing a transaction.

Gift card rules

Do gift cards expire?

Under the federal CARD Act, the funds on a gift card can't expire for at least five years from the date the card was purchased or last loaded. But the physical card itself might have an expiry date printed on it. If the card "expires" but the funds are still protected, the issuer should let you request a replacement card.

Can a gift card lose money from fees?

It depends. Store-specific gift cards (like a Target or Starbucks card) generally don't charge fees. But prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards sometimes charge a monthly inactivity fee if you don't use the card for 12 months straight. The fee is usually $2-$3 per month. Use the card before that window hits, or at least check the balance regularly so you know where you stand.

Can I get cash back from a gift card?

In some states, yes. About a dozen US states have laws that require retailers to give you cash back if your gift card balance is below a certain amount — usually $5 or $10. It varies by state, so look up the rules where you live. For prepaid Visa/Mastercard/Amex cards, cash back isn't usually an option.
